New Delhi : AN NRI candidate, who was refused admission even after clearing the final examination of the All India Pre-Medical Tests (PMT) 2007, has moved the Delhi High Court against the CBSE.

Nineteen-year-old Aseem Aggarwal’s application was allegedly turned down by the government body at the counseling session on the ground that he had not proved his Indian nationality.

The Delhi High Court, which has taken a serious note of the issue, has sought responses from both the CBSE and the Union Health Ministry.

The youngster, a native of Pathwari village in Uttar Pradesh, who completed his education till Class 12, first sent in his application for the medical tests earlier this year and received a reply from the Board to submit proof of his status as an “overseas citizen of India”.

Subsequently, Aggarwal, as per his petition, filed his overseas certificate issued by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and was duly issued an admission card allowing him to attend the entrance exams.

Aggarwal cleared his prelims on April 1, 2007, and subsequently cleared his finals the next month with a rank of 1,643 on the merit list, the petition said, adding that his name had appeared in the CBSE’s official website.

On the day of counseling on June 25, Aggarwal was refused an allotment of seat with an explanation that there was no official information or papers about his appearance in the exams.

On contacting the Board’s office, Aggarwal’s mother allegedly received an official letter from the former confirming the rejection of her son’s admission on the ground that he “had not fulfilled the eligibility criteria pertaining to his nationality
