Chicago (Dr.Harjinder Singh Khaira) : Punjab Sports Club Midwest hosted the 5th World Kabaddi Cup tournament at Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village. Chicago .Over 2500 spectators and Kabaddi fans with their families and friends from Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, Seattle & Iowa attended the tournament which was successful with the help of PCO Milwaukee, Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Society South Bend Indiana, Punjabi American Youth Club Indiana, Sant Baba Prem Singh Society Indiana, PHO Chicago, PAO Chicago, PCS Chicago and PCS Indianapolis.

Total 6 teams from Canada, America, India, New York, Midwest and Doaba Sports Club Chicago competed for the World cup .
The tournament started with Ardaas(Blessings from Almighty) and then the parade from the participants. Several very tough and close competitive matches were played till evening. Special arrangements were made for the spectators for their convenience and comfort with Free Entry, free food, free parking and live folk singing entertainment.
The final match was played between America and Canada team and was won by America Team coordinated by Johan Singh Gill of California and Channa Alamgir from Seattle and won Ist prize of $11000 donated by Darshan Singh Dhaliwal in memory of his father Late Subedar Kartar Singh Dhaliwal.The cup was presented by Sukhi Dhaliwal on behalf of Dhaliwal family.

2nd Prize went to Canada West of $8100 donated by Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Society South Bend, Indiana by Paul Khalil and his team.

Rajinder Singh Bains of Indiana donated 3rd Prize of $5100.

Best Raider and stopper(Players) of the tournament were Tarlochan Singh Tochi and Meek.

Live Commentary by world-renowned Kabaddi commentator Prof.Makhan Singh and Dara Singh Grewal thrilled the spectators with their typical and traditional Punjabi quotations and unique vocabulary. Prominent poet Makhan Brar of “Apna Punjab Hove” fame, Deep Mangli from New York and Happy Heer facilitated local help to honor the sponsors on the stage.

World famous folk singer Mohammad Sadique, Sukhjit Kaur and K.S. Makhan entertained the audience and live singing of these renowned singers thrilled them. Dr.Harjinder Khaira and Happy Heer coordinated the cultural program.

Though kabaddi is primarily an Indian game, not much is known about the origin of this game. There is, however, concrete evidence, that the game is 4,000 year old. It is a team sport, which requires both skill and power, and combines the characteristics of wrestling and rugby. It was originally meant to develop self-defense, in addition to responses to attack and reflexes of counter attack by individuals and by groups or teams. It is a rather simple and inexpensive game, and neither requires a massive playing area, nor any expensive equipment. This explains the popularity of the game in rural India. Kabaddi is played all over Asia with minor variations.
