CHANDIGARH: NRI dollars are a great attraction for Panjab University departments. That seems to be the only plausible explanation for their offering more than 15% reservation for NRI candidates, which is in blatant violation of the Supreme Court verdict.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has already taken note of the violation of apex court directions by various universities which have divided seats reserved for NRI candidates into sub-categories.
Vice-chancellor RC Sobti said, “This over-allotment of NRI seats happened over the years and will be reduced gradually in the coming sessions. We will adhere to the apex court guidelines in all fields.”
PU also offers 50% relaxation to wards of PU employees admitted under NRI- sponsored category.
At University Business School, one of the most prestigious departments, 33 out of 74 seats have been reserved for NRI category, including sub-categories, instead of the stipulated 11.1. In MBA HR and IB, nine out of 37 seats have been reserved for NRI category and sub-categories instead of the allowed five seats.
In masters of mass communication, 10 out of 50 seats have been reserved for NRI and NRI-sponsored candidates instead of 7.5 seats.
At the department of laws, 60 seats have been reserved for NRI category and its sub-categories out of 210, instead of 31.5.
Now, students and their parents have also started raising their voice to reduce reservation for NRI candidates to the stipulated 15% of the total seats.
